Guys, don't say it. Yes, it's me that is doing a review of a romantic movie that has one toe dipped in Science Fiction. There are those occasions that my wife or daughter get to pick the movie. Usually, they let me pick, but when a good romance shows up we see it. That actually does not happen that much. So, when The Time Traveler's Wife hit the shelf and my daughter wanted to see it, I agreed.
The funny part was when I brought it home and my wife said she was unsure about it. According to her it seemed perverted. An older gentleman going back in time and meeting his future wife, Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes, State of Play) as Clare Abshire, when she is just a little girl, Brooklyn Proulx (Valentine's Day, The Lazarus Project) for Clare at 6-8 and Tatum McCann (ER (TV), Smith (TV)) as Clair for 4 and 5. Yeah.........it does "sound" as if it could be bit perverted.
But not really. She is actually close to his age in the present and he is a gentleman when he is around his wife's younger self.
The whole premise of the movie is that the time traveler, Eric Bana (Star Trek, Troy, Black Hawk Down) as Henry DeTamble, moves back and forth through time (at the drop of a hat, without any control) around people he loves and their lives. This makes for some awkward moments, some touching moments and some scary moments. He even gets to meet himself at a younger age, Alex Ferris (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Plan). Yet, it carries the theme of "Love transends time" throughout the whole film.
Other supporting actors included: Arliss Howard (Awake, Amistad) as Henry's father, Richard; Ron Livingston (American Crude, Little Black Book) as Gomez; and Jane McLean (Dexter (TV), Shoot 'Em Up) as Charisse.
The story is well written, the acting very well done and the scenes are impeccable. I would recommend this movie, especially if you love the thinking about the "what if's" of time travel.
I would give this three and a half stars out of five.
